Well this is a novelty – not only a holiday but also a plane journey too! We are on our way to Edinburgh, delayed from last year, to spend some time at the Fringe.
I must admit that last night I was a little apprehensive about it all as it has been quite a while since we have been on a plane. BA were suggesting that we arrive two hours before the flight time to take account of all the changes brought on about the pandemic. Being good citizens that’s exactly what we did but actually it wasn’t really necessary as there aren’t any differences to before other than the fact that you have to wear a mask.
In previous years Edinburgh has been heaving during the Fringe as tourists mingle with those publicising their shows thrust flyers towards you. This year numbers do seem to be down and I would describe it as busy rather than heaving. Gone though were the flyer pushers perhaps becuase there are less live shows this year which much online.
What live shows there are appear to be a little different too if the one we attended this afternoon was anything to go by. In previous years shows have been squeezed into the smallest and most unlikeliest of spaces but not this year. This show (The Carole King and James Taylor Story) was held outside under a marquee. Today has been unseasonably good weather for Edinburgh – it’s dry for a start which is a bit of a revelation – and warm so sitting out in an open sided tent wasn’t too bad but I can imagine that when it’s cold and wet it would be a bit miserable. Of course this being day one of five we may yet get to discover just what that’s like!
My signature dish when cooking is Ruby Chicken from the Dishoon cookbook and this evening we are off to their restaurant so I’ll get to see just how it is made properly.
