In order to do something that wasn’t aimed at a three year old a couple of us went to the Target Centre this morning to do archery. The Target Centre was a reasonable distance from the lodge and looking at the map didn’t seem possible to reach by bike. This was because it was at the bottom of a very steep hill and you weren’t allowed to freewhile down so we pushed.
I have always fancied myself as a bit of an archer becuase I have amazing long sight. I can read wording on signs when others can’t even see the sign so I felt pretty confident of my ability.
Turns out that excellent eyesite isn’t the only criteria for being a budding Robin Hood. There is also the need to be able to extend your arm straight and hold it there which, it turns out, is not compatible with a rotator cuff inury. And yes I am going to use that as an excuse for my poor performance.
We were given an overview of how to place the arrow on the bow and some safety information before being allowed to fire off our first three arrows. This was a gentle introduction before we were given a series of “games” that we could play to try and introduce an element of competition of the session. These were all variations on a theme with different points for hitting different bits of the target, making the top half out of bounds etc.
One of these games was around when you hit the blue ring. If you hit it with your first arrow only the second the third hits would count. If you hit it on the second arrow only the last arrow counted. Up until that point in the proceedings I don’t think I had hit the blue ring at all. Of course this round, when it mattered, I hit it twice and scored zero.
All and all it was an enjoyable session even if I scored so badly I came rock bottom but I blame the rotator cuff injury without which I would have been perfect!
