We love Wisley and are regular visitors. Every time we go back there is something new to see as the colours change over the seasons. It is a place for relaxation, I find it easy to switch off there, and inspiration for my own garden. So we were looking forward to our visit today especially as it coincided with the annual Wisley Flower Show.
I did wonder if it would be on given the death of HRH earlier in the week and that she was patron of the RHS. I received an email a couple of days before which confirmed that the gardens would be open and the show would go ahead as planned but that there would be “no music or guest talks as a mark of respect”. However, the stalls would be there and open. So, to sum up, as a mark of respect no music will be played but the sale of plants is ok. It’s what she would have wanted!
We arrived at opening time and there was already a long queue of people waiting to go in. From previous expereince we know that it clears quickly given a few minutes so we went for a quick coffee to allow thngs to die down.
Once inside we did a walk around the tents selling plants and other gardening related paraphernalia. Each seller has a small tent with a display area in front. It is amazing the quality of displays that the vendors are able to achieve in such a small space – it really does show what you can do when you know what you are doing. Other vendors were selling equipment, wind spinners, sculptures and other manner of things tangentially related to gardening. I found some really classy looking, small, greenhouses that would be perfect for our garden but I will need to make a better business cases than “I want one of those”!
After that we walked away from the vendors to do a walk around the extensive grounds. September is a lovely time to visit as eveything is so colourful and the weather just perfect. We were done before lunch and came away before it got too busy. We will return again later in the year to see Wisley in its Autumn glory.
