Spain 2023 – Day Two – Cádiz

After spending all-day yesterday trapped on the boat (or “at sea” as Tui prefer to call it) I was glad to get off today and back onto terra firma.

The Hidden Amphitheater

Port of call today was Cadiz, somewhere that we haven’t been before so I was looking forward to paying it a visit.

After a Half-English (A Full-English without the sausage and bacon) we were off. Once again we eschewed the organised tours and made our own way on foot. This isn’t always possible as either the port is a long way from the town (Athens) or the point of interest isn’t even in the town (Ephesus).

Using the GPSmyCity app we had plotted a route around the major sites with the first one being the Roman Amphitheater. The problem was that the guide took us to a modern brick wall. Nothing could look less Roman. There then followed a fruitless five minutes while we searched the local area looking for said amphitheater without success, which was a shame. Onwards!

The following stops were more successful including a traditional market selling fresh fish, fruit and vegetables. I love a good market that is obviously aimed at the locals rather than the tourists.

We ended up at a park with the sea at one end and a small but well done set of waterfalls at the other which was rather unusual and I’d not seen in a park before. We then walked back to the boat along the sea wall.

Fore!

While this isn’t the largest of cruise ships it is big enough to have a crazy golf area on the top deck. Turns out that most people are more interested in cooking themselves on loungers than a round of crazy golf so it is sparsely used. This allowed us to spend time this afternoon playing and unlike last time I played when I was soundly thrashed this time I won!

In the evening, after returning from the theatre watching six kids murder some contemporary songs, we returned to our room to find it now somewhat unexpectedly contained a man in a boiler-suit up a step ladder with the roof panels down. Neither of us could remember ordering such an extra! It was like a Bob Hoskins scene from the film Brazil! Hopefully, this is a temporary addition as I don’t really want to retire to bed with him still there!
