Croatia 2024 – Day Six – Dubrovnik, Croatia

We’ve been to Dubrovnik once before, in 2015, and remember it as an attractive but busy place to visit. Like Split, it apparently has some connection to Game of Thrones which attracts visitors but, again, I still have no idea what that is.

We risked incurring the wrath of the local taxi firms by once again getting an Uber to Pile Gate at the entrance of the Old Town. It was slow going for the last half a mile as everyone else was also making their way in.

We headed straight to the city walls and paid the €35 fee each. I hadn’t remembered paying before but checking back it seems we did though I doubt it was such a chunky fee. I guess that they are trying to keep the numbers on the walls down. It’s a strenuous walk around but totally worth it for the views over the orange-tiled buildings and out to sea. Once we’d finished we braved the crowds that filled the streets below and stopped for an expensive coffee and orange juice – €11!

While Dubrovnik is attractive, the sign below shows just how much was damaged/destroyed during the war in the early nineties and has been subsequently rebuilt. That notwithstanding it is beautiful and well worth a visit.
