The last days are always difficult to fill, particularly when your flight doesn’t leave until 10 pm. Fortunately, we had a cunning plan, which was to take a boat trip out into the Gulf of Maine in search of wildlife.
We’re not going to need a bigger boat
We shared this journey with about 98 other people courtesy of 7 Seas Whale Watch who run trips out of Gloucester. So bullish are 7 Seas that you will see something that they offer a guarantee that if you don’t you will get your money back – unfortunately this is in the form of a credit to use at a later date so not much use to us. However, it’s not much of a spoiler to say we were fine given the pictures above and below!
We travelled out for about 40 minutes and immediately saw a spout of water followed by the back of a humpback whale. We then spent the next couple of hours following one or another of the great beasts. We probably saw about five different whales over the time we were out.
Sometimes they were quite far away from the boat, other times we were right next to them as they swam underneath the boat – it was quite exhilarating to watch. The trick was to be on the right side of the boat ready for when they surfaced and to not spend all your time looking at the screen of the phone rather than the animals themselves.
It was a tremendous way to end what has been a great holiday.
Wow! I remember seeing whales of the Edisto Beach in South Carolina. We also saw whales in the distance from Oahu, Hawaii, and dolphins and flying fish!
Hope you had a trouble free flight back home.
